Who is this chick?

I’m Marie, The Poor Mom. That’s us, The Poor Family.

I renamed this blog ‘The Poor Mom’ because between Pinterest and stylized lifestyle/mommy blogs there didn’t seem like there were enough normal moms with normal problems working out of normal budgets.

I wanted this to be a place for people to see that you can have a small* house in a bad** neighborhood and make not-so-much*** money and still be really, really happy, and, dare I say, #blessed.

I don’t have any authority on parenting or living, but I do know that the voices in our lives influence us. That sometimes we get really caught up in the desire to accumulate more, make more, and spend more. And sometimes we need someone to remind us that the stuff of this world really doesn’t matter. That it’s ok to breathe. That it’s ok to feel #blessed even if your house is messy, you ate fast food for dinner, and your kid just peed on the cat.

As for some more practical details: I work in the construction industry (I love it), and write about marriage as my side hustle. Mark is a songwriter and is currently living that dream out. We have one son, Otis, and he is just the very best thing that has ever (accidentally) happened to us. I want one more kid, Mark’s not so sure. We live down the street from both sets of grandparents, and it’s wonderful (my running joke is we have grannies instead of nannies).

I hope you enjoy reading our stories, and are inspired to know you #blessed right where you are.

P.S. Let’s pretend this blog becomes the end all be all of all mommy blogs and rakes in huge amounts of cash. I would like to formally say, right now, that if anyone gives me money or products I’m not keeping anything. If this blog produces any income at all it will go straight to moms who really are struggling, specifically I’d like to donate to our community food bank, The Branch.

* Our house has 1,500 square feet. 1,900 if you count the garage. The cats have their own bathroom, and we have rooms we rarely/never even use. The amount of space we actually use during a day is possibly 600 square feet. Our house is really only small in comparison to a McMansion.

** We live in Antioch which is the ‘bad’ part of Nashville. I have never ever felt unsafe or afraid in my neighborhood, and other than a few too-fast-for-my-liking drivers I’m really happy with the people that live around me. I will say that my neighborhood is very brown (like me), and I can imagine that makes some people uncomfortable.

*** We don’t make a lot of money. Like, we aren’t in the middle class. We are textbook low-income. But we don’t have credit card debt, our bills are always paid on time (unless I forget to move money into the bill paying account which is embarrassing), and I’ve never lost an ounce of sleep because of finances. True story: I credit all of that to (finally) getting in the habit of tithing.

Marie, I absolutely ‘love’ your page! Too cute! We should always remember ourselves as children and not take life SO seriously…except for the SERIOUS parts .

Are you related to the McKinney’s who have a candy factory in Donegal, Irealnd? My grandfather, Sam McKinney, is directly related to that clan. I’d be interested to know.

I’m not sure, but I honestly doubt it. If anyone in my family owned a candy factory I would for sure know. I love candy. 😀

  4. Happy to learn a little bit more about you! 🙂 Adorable family!
